All About Grasses
Grasses are a big family of plants called Poaceae. They include many kinds of plants like cereal grasses, bamboos, and grasses in lawns and fields. There are many different types of grasses, making this one of the largest plant families.
Grasses are very important to us and to the world. They give us food like maize, wheat, rice, oats, barley, and millet. Grasses also feed animals and can be used to make things like biofuel.
Grasses have special hollow stems and narrow leaves that grow from the base. They can grow in many places, from rainy forests to dry deserts. Grasslands, where grasses are the main plants, cover much of the Earth, except for Greenland and Antarctica.
Grasses come in many shapes and sizes. Some grow for just one year, while others live for many years. Their stems are usually round and hollow, and their leaves have parallel lines. Grass flowers are small and grow in clusters called spikelets. Most grass flowers can make their own seeds and are pollinated by wind.
Grasses are useful in many ways. They help us grow food, make things we use every day, and keep our environment healthy. We use grasses to feed people and animals, build homes, make paper, create clothing, and even build furniture. Some types of grasses, like bamboo, are very strong and can be used instead of wood.
Grasses have been important to people for thousands of years. We grow them to feed people and animals. We also use them to make beer, like barley or wheat. In many neighborhoods, having a well-kept lawn shows that someone cares about their home and the area around them.
