What is the Priabonian?

The Priabonian is a special time in Earth's long history. It was a warm time, part of something called the Eocene Epoch. This was millions and millions of years ago, when the world was much hotter than today.

When Did it Happen?

The Priabonian lasted from about 37.71 million years ago to 33.9 million years ago. Before this time was the Bartonian. After the Priabonian came the Rupelian, which is the start of the next time period, the Oligocene.

An Ancient Fly

There was also a tiny fly called Priabona that lived during the Priabonian time. This little insect was found in old dirt layers from that special time long ago.

Where Did the Name Come From?

The name Priabonian comes from a small place called Priabona. This place is near Monte di Malo in the Veneto area of northern Italy. Two scientists, Ernest Munier-Chalmas and Albert de Lapparent, first talked about this time in science books in the year 1893.
