Salzburg is a lovely city in Austria. It is the fourth-largest city in the country and is home to about 156,000 people. Salzburg sits on the Salzach River, close to the Alps mountains. The city is near the border with Germany.
A City with History
Salzburg has a long and interesting history. It began as a small settlement called Iuvavum when the Romans lived there. Over time, the city grew because of its salt trade and beautiful buildings. One of its most famous landmarks is the Hohensalzburg Fortress, a huge castle built a long time ago.

Salzburg is known for its pretty Baroque architecture. In 1996, the old part of the city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also famous because the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born there. Today, Salzburg has three universities and is a popular place for visitors, just like Vienna.
