What Are Sarsen Stones?
Sarsen stones are very special, hard rocks found in parts of England. They are mostly found on the wide, open land of the Salisbury Plain and the Marlborough Downs in a county called Wiltshire. Smaller groups of these stones are also in places like Kent, Berkshire, Essex, Oxfordshire, Dorset, and Hampshire.
These stones are made of a very hard kind of rock called sandstone. They became super strong over millions of years, which made them perfect for building.
Why Are Sarsen Stones Famous?
People have used sarsen stones for thousands of years to build important places. One of the most famous places is Stonehenge, where huge stone circles stand as a mystery from long ago. The big stones at Stonehenge, like the Heel Stone and the tall stones in a circle, are all made from sarsen.
Other big old buildings like Avebury also used sarsen stones. Because these stones stay strong for such a long time, people liked to use them for steps and edges too.
Where Do the Words Come From?
The word "sarsen" might have come from different places. One idea is that it is a short form of "Saracen stone," which came from the Wiltshire dialect. Another idea is that "sarsen" sounds like a word from very old languages. Some people think it comes from an old English phrase "sar-stan," meaning 'troublesome stone,' because these stones were hard to move and work with.
