Sikorsky Ilya Muromets
The Sikorsky Ilya Muromets was an amazing early airplane made a long time ago. It was created by a clever engineer named Igor Sikorsky in Saint Petersburg, a beautiful city in Russia. This airplane was special because it had four engines, which made it strong and steady in the sky.
People named this airplane after Ilya Muromets, a brave hero from old Russian folklore (5). At first, the Ilya Muromets was built to carry passengers. It had a cozy space where people could sit, and it even had heating and lights—very fancy for its time!
Later, the Ilya Muromets helped during a difficult time when countries did not get along. It was one of the first big airplanes used for important missions. Because of its size and strength, it was hard for smaller airplanes to reach it. Pilots liked to fly it, and it did many different jobs in the sky.
Today, you can see a copy of the Ilya Muromets at the Monino Air Force Museum near Moscow. This copy was built in 1970 to show how wonderful these old airplanes were. The Ilya Muromets will always be remembered as a clever and strong airplane from the early days of flight.
