What is Slavery?

Slavery is when one person is owned by another person and made to work. This happened in many places a long time ago. People were enslaved for different reasons, such as losing a battle or owing money.

People who were enslaved had to work very hard without any pay. They lived where their owners chose. Some were slaves for their whole lives, while others were allowed to be free after a certain time.

Where Did Slavery Happen?

Slavery happened in many parts of the world. It was common in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. It also happened in places like Sub-Saharan Africa, Brazil, and the United States.

Today, slavery is against the law almost everywhere. But sadly, some people are still trapped and forced to work without their consent. This can happen in factories, homes, or other places.

Why Do We Know About Slavery?

Many people worked hard to end slavery. In the 1700s, people began to speak out against it because they believed everyone should be treated equally. Different countries ended slavery at different times. For example, France ended it in 1794, the British Empire in 1833, and the United States in 1865.

Today, groups all over the world continue to work to end slavery and help those who are still affected by it.
