What is Solar Wind?

Solar wind is a gentle stream of tiny particles that flows from the Sun. These particles come from the Sun’s outer layer, called the corona. The Sun is made of hot gas, and some of this gas escapes and floats out into space. This floating gas is what we call solar wind.

The solar wind is made mostly of tiny parts called electrons and protons. It also has a few heavier particles, like those from carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. These particles move very fast, zooming away from the Sun at speeds between 250 and 750 kilometers every second!

How Does Solar Wind Affect Us?

Even though the solar wind moves very fast, it does not hurt us here on Earth. Our planet has a special shield called a magnetosphere. This shield pushes most of the solar wind away, keeping us safe. Sometimes, when the solar wind is extra strong, it can make beautiful lights in the sky called aurora. These lights look like dancing colors near the north and south poles.

Solar wind also helps shape the tails of comets. When you see a comet with a long tail pointing away from the Sun, that tail is being pushed by the solar wind!

Learning About Solar Wind

Scientists have been studying solar wind for many years. In 1959, a spacecraft called Luna 1 was the first to measure solar wind directly. Since then, many space missions have traveled near the Sun to learn more. One amazing mission is the Parker Solar Probe. It travels closer to the Sun than any spacecraft before to discover how solar wind is created.

Solar wind is a wonderful example of how the Sun sends out energy and particles. It helps us understand our place in space and how the Sun influences everything around it.
