The Big Island of New Zealand
The South Island is the bigger of the two main islands of New Zealand. It is very large, about as big as some small countries! Many people live here, about 1.2 million, which is one-quarter of all New Zealand’s people.
Land and Nature
The South Island has many amazing places. To the north, it is bordered by Cook Strait. To the west lies the Tasman Sea, and to the south, the Southern Ocean. The Southern Alps stretch along the middle of the island. The tallest mountain is Aoraki / Mount Cook. It is very high—almost 4,000 meters tall!
The land changes a lot. The east side has flat fields and wide valleys. The west side has rough coasts, glaciers, and deep valleys. These valleys were carved by old glaciers that melted long ago.
People and Cities
Many people live in cities on the South Island. The biggest city is Christchurch. Other big towns include Dunedin, Invercargill, and Nelson. These cities grew when people came looking for gold long ago. Today, they are busy places with lots of people.
People on the South Island enjoy many fun things. They love visiting beautiful parks like Fiordland National Park and Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. Many also like skiing because the South Island has many snow-covered mountains.
Visiting the South Island
The South Island is a wonderful place to visit. You can see whales in Kaikōura, hike in the Marlborough Sounds, or explore glaciers. There are also many farms where you can see sheep and other animals.
Getting around is easy. There are big roads, like SH 1, that go up and down the island. Trains and ferries also help people travel. The biggest airport is at Christchurch, but you can also fly into Dunedin and Queenstown.
The South Island is full of amazing sights and friendly people. It is a special place that many love to visit and call home.
