Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles was a British person who helped shape the history of Southeast Asia. He is best known for helping create Singapore as a major place for trade.

Raffles was born on July 5, 1781, on a ship near Port Morant, Jamaica. His father was a sailor who traveled between England and the West Indies. Raffles went to school in Hammersmith and later worked for the East India Company in London.

In 1819, Raffles went to a small island called Singapore. He made a deal with local leaders to start a trading place there. This helped make Singapore very important for trade between Europe and Asia.

Raffles also wrote a book called The History of Java in 1817. After that, he returned to England in 1824. Sadly, he passed away in 1826.

Today, many places and schools in Singapore remember Raffles. For example, there is Raffles Hotel and Raffles Institution. There are also statues of him in public places in Singapore. The big flower called Rafflesia was named after him.
