Who was Stichus?

Stichus is a funny play written a long time ago in Latin. The writer was a man named Titus Maccius Plautus. He liked to make people laugh with his stories. This play was first shown in the year 200 BC, which is very old!

What happens in the play?

The play happens in a beautiful city called Athens. It tells a story about two sisters, Panegyris and Pamphila. Their husbands have been away at sea for two years, and their father wants them to get married again. But the sisters hope their husbands will come back.

Good news arrives! A slave named Pinacium tells the sisters that one husband has returned. Soon after, the other husband comes back too. Everyone is happy again.

Fun parts of the story

One funny part is when a hungry man named Gelasimus tries many times to get invited to dinner but keeps getting turned down! At the end of the play, there is a happy celebration. A slave named Stichus and his friend dance and have a great time.

People still enjoy reading Stichus today because of its humor and the warm feelings it shares about family and friends.
