Tenochtitlan
Tenochtitlan was a very old and big city. It was built on an island in Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico. Today, this place is part of Mexico City.
People first built Tenochtitlan in the year 1325. It became the home of the Aztec Empire in the 1400s. Many people lived there, and it was the largest city in the Americas at that time.
The city had special gardens called floating gardens on the water. People used canoes to travel through the city. There were also bridges to go to the land around the lake.
Today, you can still see old parts of Tenochtitlan in the middle of Mexico City. The Zócalo is where the heart of the old city was. People call this place a World Heritage Site because it is very important for learning about the past.
Tenochtitlan was one of two cities on the island. The other city was Tlatelolco. Both were part of the Mexica people’s land.
The name Tenochtitlan comes from an old language called Nahuatl. It might mean “Among the prickly pears growing among rocks.” Some think it was named after a person called Tenoch.
