Therizinosaurus: The Gentle Giant with Big Claws
Therizinosaurus was a very special kind of dinosaur that lived a long, long time ago during the Late Cretaceous period. It lived in what is now Asia, especially in a dry, sandy place called the Gobi Desert.
What made Therizinosaurus stand out was its super long, strong claws on its front arms. These claws were like big, curved tools. Scientists think Therizinosaurus used them to help grab leaves and branches from tall trees. It had a long neck and a big body, which helped it reach food high up where other dinosaurs could not.
Therizinosaurus was one of the last big dinosaurs of its kind. It was about as long as three school buses put together—around 9 to 10 meters (30 to 33 feet)! Even though it had huge claws, Therizinosaurus was probably a gentle eater, using its arms to reach tasty leaves and plants. It lived in a world with many other interesting dinosaurs, including big plant-eaters and clever hunters.
The story of Therizinosaurus began in 1948 when scientists from the USSR Academy of Sciences were searching for fossils in the Nemegt Formation in Mongolia. They found some big, strange claws and later learned about this amazing dinosaur from a scientist named Evgeny Maleev. Since then, more fossils have helped us learn how special and unique Therizinosaurus was.
