What is a Treaty?

A treaty is a special agreement between countries. Think of it like a promise they make to each other. These promises can be about many things, like keeping peace, trading goods, or protecting the environment.

People have been making these agreements for a very long time, even in ancient times! One of the oldest known treaties is displayed in a museum in Istanbul. It shows how important these promises have been throughout history.

Why Are Treaties Important?

Treaties help countries work together and solve problems without fighting. They set rules that everyone agrees to follow. For example, some treaties help countries trade fairly, while others protect nature and wildlife.

The United Nations helps countries make big treaties that many nations agree to. This makes sure everyone knows about the rules and follows them.

Different Kinds of Treaties

There are two main types of treaties: bilateral and multilateral.

  • Bilateral treaties are promises between just two countries.
  • Multilateral treaties are promises among many countries, sometimes even the whole world!

Both types help countries cooperate and keep things running smoothly.
