World Heritage Sites

World Heritage Sites are very special places chosen because they are important for people all over the world. These places can be old buildings, beautiful natural areas, or even whole cities. They are protected to make sure they stay safe for everyone to enjoy.

These special places are chosen by an organization called UNESCO. UNESCO helps countries take care of these sites. There are special rules to make sure these places do not get damaged. As of July 2025, there are 1,248 World Heritage Sites in 170 countries around the world.

The idea to protect special places started in 1972. Before that, some places were in danger. For example, in the 1950s, a big dam was planned in Egypt that could have hurt important treasures from ancient Egypt and Nubia. With help from UNESCO, these treasures were saved by moving temples to safer spots, like Abu Simbel and Philae.

World Heritage Sites can be many different things. Some are amazing buildings like the Taj Mahal in India. Others are natural wonders, such as the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. These places help us learn about history, nature, and how people have shaped the world. They are important for everyone, now and in the future.
