Archery
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Archery is the sport, practice, or skill of using a bow to shoot arrows. The word comes from the Latin arcus, meaning bow.
Historically, people used archery for hunting animals and in battles. Today, archery is a popular sport and fun activity for many people to enjoy.
A person who practices archery is usually called an archer, bowman, or toxophilite. Archery needs focus, precision, and practice. It can be both challenging and rewarding. Many people enjoy seeing how accurately they can hit a target from far away.
History
Main article: History of archery
Archery is an ancient skill that uses a bow to shoot arrows. The oldest known arrows were found in South Africa, dating back around 72,000 to 60,000 years ago. Later, bows and arrows were found in Northern Europe, from 17,500 to 18,000 years ago.
Many cultures used archery for hunting and fighting. Ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, Indians, Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese all had skilled archers. In Europe, archers with longbows were important in battles like the Battle of Crécy and the Battle of Agincourt.
Archery changed over time, with mounted archers being important in Central Asia. As firearms grew more common, archery became less used in war, but it is still a popular sport. In the 18th century, archery became popular again in England among the aristocracy, and later it became an Olympic sport.
Archery has inspired many myths and legends. Famous figures such as Artemis, Apollo, Robin Hood, and Yi the archer are known for their skills with the bow and arrow.
Equipment
Main article: Bow and arrow
Archery uses bows to shoot arrows. Bows have a string attached to parts that bend. When you pull the string back, the bow stores energy.
There are two main types of bows. In one type, you pull the string with your hand. The other type uses a special part to help pull the string.
Bows pulled by hand include self bows, laminated bows, and composite bows. They can look different, like recurve bows that curve outward. Compound bows were made in the 1960s. They make aiming easier because they need less force to hold the string. Mechanically drawn bows, such as crossbows, use a handle to help pull the string. They can be used by anyone, not just strong archers.
Main article: Arrow
Arrows usually have a shaft, an arrowhead at the front, and fletchings at the back. Arrows are often carried in a quiver. Shafts can be made from wood, bamboo, fiberglass, aluminium, carbon fiber, or mixed materials. Arrowheads are made from metal, stone, or other hard materials. They come in many types, such as target points and broadheads. Fletchings help the arrow fly straight. They were once made from bird feathers but are now often made from plastic.

Modern bowstrings are often made from dacron or other strong materials. Older bows may use linen or other fibers.
Main articles: Bracer, Finger tab, and Thumb ring
Archers wear protective gear. A bracer guards the arm from the bowstring. A tab or thumb ring protects the fingers. Some archers also wear chest guards.
Main article: Release aid
Release aids are tools that help archers shoot arrows more precisely from compound bows. They can be triggered by a finger or automatically when the string is pulled back.
Main article: Stabiliser (archery)
Stabilizers attach to the bow. They help improve balance and accuracy. They can also reduce noise and vibration.
Shooting technique and form
The way you learn archery depends on which eye you use more. If you are right-eye dominant, you hold the bow with your left hand and pull the string with your right hand. Some people think the hand that moves best should be the one that pulls and lets go of the string. Either eye can be used for aiming, and the less used eye can be trained to work better.
In modern target archery, archers usually stand with their body turned to the side of the target, with feet about shoulder-width apart. This is called a "neutral stance". To shoot, the archer points the bow down and puts the arrow on the bowstring, a step called "nocking the arrow". The archer then lifts the bow, pulls the string back to a fixed spot, aims, and lets go of the arrow.
Aiming methods
There are two main ways archers aim. One way is to use a sight. Sights can be simple, like a pin, or more advanced with magnification. They help archers keep a steady aim. The other way is called barebow, where archers aim without a sight. Barebow archers look at the target, their bow, and their arrow all at once.
Some archers use a method called instinctive shooting. This means they rely on feel and practice instead of sights. Another method is gap shooting. In this method, archers focus on the arrow tip while thinking about the target. They adjust their aim based on the distance between the arrow tip and the target. Both methods need practice to become accurate.
Physics
When you throw something by hand, its speed depends on how fast your muscles can work. But your arms can only move so far and so fast, so there is a limit to how much speed you can give the object.
With a bow, your muscles can pull the string slowly, storing energy in the bow like a spring. When you release, that stored energy pushes the arrow much faster than your muscles alone ever could. This is why bows can shoot arrows much farther and faster than simply throwing something.
Arrows are made with a certain stiffness, called “spine,” so they bend just the right way when shot — this helps them fly straight. The feathers, or “fletchings,” at the back of the arrow help keep it spinning in flight, which also makes it more accurate.
Arrows can be made for different purposes. Some have blunt tips for practice, while others have sharp tips for hunting or historical battles.
Hunting
Main article: Bow hunting
Bow hunting means using a bow and arrow to hunt animals. It is different from using guns because the hunter needs to get closer to the animal. Hunters can do this by moving slowly, waiting in a hidden place, or being very quiet. In many places, such as parts of the United States, people are allowed to hunt animals with bows. Bow hunters often have more time to hunt than with other methods. For bigger animals, many people use compound bows. These bows can be easier to learn and have features to help aim better. Some people also use bows to catch fish, called bow fishing.
Modern competitive archery
Main article: Modern competitive archery
Competitive archery is a popular sport where people shoot arrows at targets to see who can hit the target most accurately. This type of archery is called target archery. People practice it all around the world.
In Europe and America, people also enjoy field archery or 3D Archery. In these types of archery, targets are placed at different distances in a wooded area.
There is a special version of archery called para-archery for athletes with disabilities. It is included in the Summer Paralympic Games. Other fun forms of archery include games and flight archery, where people try to shoot arrows the farthest distance possible.
