The brass section is an important part of many musical groups, such as the orchestra, concert band, and jazz ensemble. It uses instruments that you play by blowing into them, like trumpets and trombones. These instruments make bright and powerful sounds that make music more exciting.

In a British-style brass band, the music only comes from the brass section and percussion instruments. There are no strings or voices, so the sound is very different from other types of bands.

All brass instruments are grouped together using a special system called Hornbostel-Sachs classification. They all fall under the number 423, which means they are brass instruments. This shows how these instruments are related and why they are often played together in groups.

Orchestra

The brass section of an orchestra has several types of instruments. A typical orchestra might have 4 to 8 French horns, 2 to 4 Trumpets, 2 to 3 Tenor trombones, 1 Bass trombone, and 1 Tuba. Sometimes, music might need an extra bass trombone, or even a Contrabass trombone or a Cimbasso.

Jazz ensemble

The brass section in jazz ensembles has many kinds of brass instruments. A usual jazz brass section has 4 trumpets, 3 Tenor trombones, and 1 Bass trombone. These instruments make the bright and strong sounds that are special to jazz music.
