Hugh Christopher Longuet-Higgins (11 April 1923 – 27 March 2004) was a British theoretical chemist and cognitive scientist. He helped scientists understand how molecules work and how our minds process information.
Longuet-Higgins was a professor at the University of Cambridge for thirteen years. In 1967, he moved to the University of Edinburgh to explore the new field of cognitive science. His work there helped connect science with how we think and learn.
Besides his science work, Longuet-Higgins loved music. He played and wrote music, and he wanted to understand the science behind music. He also started a science journal called Molecular Physics to share important ideas about molecules.
Education and early life
Hugh Christopher Longuet-Higgins was born on 11 April 1923 in Lenham, Kent, England. He went to school at The Pilgrims' School and Winchester College, where he made friends with Freeman Dyson and James Lighthill. In 1941, he earned a scholarship to study at Balliol College, Oxford. There, he studied chemistry and music. While still a student, he figured out the correct shape of a chemical called diborane (B2H6), which was a big discovery at the time. He finished his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1947 at the University of Oxford with Charles Coulson as his teacher.
Career and research
After finishing his studies, Christopher Longuet-Higgins did research at the University of Chicago and the University of Manchester. In 1952, he became a professor at King's College London, and in 1954, he joined the University of Cambridge as a professor of chemistry. At Cambridge, he made important discoveries in chemistry and later became very interested in how the brain works and the field of artificial intelligence. In 1967, he moved to the University of Edinburgh to help start a new department focused on understanding machines and vision.
In 1974, he joined Sussex University in Brighton, England, where he contributed to computer vision by introducing important ideas and methods. He retired in 1988 but continued to study how to make computers understand music. His work was recognized with many honors, including becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society and receiving honorary doctorates from several universities. Even after his death in 2004, his contributions were honored with a special prize in computer vision named after him.
Personal life
Christopher Longuet-Higgins passed away on March 27, 2004, at the age of 80. Even though he respected many traditions of the Church of England, he did not believe in a higher power.
