Colorado Plateau

The Colorado Plateau is a big, high desert area in the Southwestern United States. It is centered around the Four Corners region and covers about 130,000 square miles. This land lies within western Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, southern and eastern Utah, northern Arizona, and a small part of southeast Nevada.
The landscape of the Colorado Plateau is very special. It has dry, colorful rocks, making it known as “Red Rock Country.” You can find amazing shapes like domes, hoodoos, and narrow canyons. One of the most famous places here is the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. Many rivers, including the Green, San Juan, and Little Colorado, flow through this area.
This region has many protected places, including nine national parks such as Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon. There are also many national monuments and other important areas kept safe for everyone to enjoy. The Colorado Plateau is a wonderful place with beautiful natural wonders.
Geography
The Colorado Plateau is a large, flat area in the southwestern United States. It covers parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and a small part of Nevada. Most of this area is drained by the Colorado River and its tributaries.
This region is bordered by mountain ranges and other land features. It includes several sections such as the Uinta Basin, Grand Canyon, Canyon Lands, Navajo Section, and Datil Section. The land here has many cliffs and canyons, like the Grand Canyon, and contains important minerals such as uranium and coal. Because it is dry, scientists have been able to study its history well. The area gets between six to sixteen inches of rain each year, and higher places have forests of pine, fir, and spruce trees.
Human history
The Ancestral Puebloan People lived in the Colorado Plateau area from about 2000 to 700 years ago. In 1776–1777, a group from Santa Fe, led by Fathers Dominguez and Escalante, traveled through much of the Plateau while looking for a land route to California.
Later, John Wesley Powell, a U.S. Army major and geologist, explored the area in 1869 and 1872 even after losing an arm in the American Civil War. His expedition helped map this unknown part of the United States for the government.
Building the Hoover Dam in the 1930s and the Glen Canyon Dam in the 1960s changed the Colorado River. The river's color changed from reddish brown to mostly clear because there was less mud and sand flowing. Experiments with controlled floods from Glen Canyon Dam in 1996 showed that these floods could help restore sand bars and beaches, and similar floods are planned every few years.
Geology
The Colorado Plateau is special because it has stayed very stable for a long time. Unlike areas around it that have been pushed up into mountains or stretched apart, this high land has changed very little in the last 600 million years. One example of a small change is the Waterpocket Fold in Capitol Reef, which formed about 50 to 70 million years ago.
Near the southern end of the plateau, where the Grand Canyon is, we can see rocks that are almost 2 billion years old. The oldest rocks are made from melted and changed material. Over time, layers of sediment covered these rocks, forming mountains that were later worn down. Later, seas covered the area, leaving behind limestone and other rocks. These layers built up over millions of years.
When a huge landmass called Pangea formed about 250 million years ago, the seas began to disappear, and the land changed with volcanoes, rivers, and lakes creating new layers of rock. Later, a sea returned, leaving more layers behind before disappearing again.
The Colorado Plateau was lifted up as one big block during a time when many mountains were forming. This lifting created some folds and small mountains made from melted rock. Even more recently, about 20 to 31 million years ago, new mountains formed from melted rock intruding into the earth’s surface. The plateau continued to rise, and rivers like the Colorado River cut deep canyons into the land. During icy times, glaciers and lakes shaped the land, but as the climate warmed, these features disappeared.
Ecology
The Colorado Plateau has dry grasslands and shrublands, along with open areas of pinyon-juniper woodland and mountain woodlands and forests.

The Colorado Plateau is an important place for making electricity. Most of this electricity comes from coal fired power plants. The rocks here also contain oil and lots of natural gas. Big oil areas are found in the San Juan Basin of New Mexico and Colorado, the Uinta Basin of Utah, the Piceance Basin of Colorado, and the Paradox Basin of Utah, Colorado, and Arizona. The area also has large amounts of uranium, which created excitement in the 1950s. There are big coal mines in Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. One special plant near Bonanza, southeast of Vernal, Utah, collects a unique type of asphalt called gilsonite for many uses like paints and roofing.
Protected lands
The Colorado Plateau is a beautiful area with many special places that are protected to keep them safe. These places have unique shapes like arches, canyons, and tall rock columns, as well as areas important to history and culture. There are nine U.S. National Parks, one National Historical Park, nineteen U.S. national monuments, and many wilderness areas here. There are also millions of acres in U.S. National Forests, state parks, and other protected lands. This area has more protected parks than any other place in North America.
Some of the most famous parks include Petrified Forest National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Zion National Park. There are also many important historical sites and natural wonders that are protected, such as Mesa Verde National Park and Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Lake Powell is a large lake created by a dam and is not a natural lake.
