Dumbbell
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
A dumbbell is a special kind of weight used for exercising and getting stronger. Unlike a barbell, which is held with both hands, a dumbbell is used one in each hand or sometimes just one at a time. It is part of what we call "free weight," meaning you hold it while you move it during exercises.
People use dumbbells to help build muscles and improve their overall fitness. They come in many shapes and sizes, from small ones made of plastic and foam to heavy ones made of metal. Because you can hold them in each hand separately, dumbbells let you do many different exercises that work different parts of your body.
Dumbbells are very popular in gyms, but you can also find them in homes for people to use when they exercise by themselves. They are a simple but very useful tool for staying healthy and strong.
History
Long ago in ancient Greece, people used tools called halteres for lifting and for a kind of long jump. In India, people used a special kind of weight shaped like a club, called the Indian club. This club was like a mix between a barbell and a dumbbell. It was used by wrestlers, bodybuilders, and athletes to get stronger and build bigger muscles.
Etymology
The word "dumbbell" started in late Stuart England. In 1711, a writer named Joseph Addison talked about using a "dumb bell" for exercise in one of his essays.
Even though Addison wrote about using equipment like today’s dumbbells, we don’t really know what the very first dumbbells looked like. The Oxford English Dictionary says it might have been like the tools used to practice English bellringing, but without the bell, making it quiet or “dumb.”
Types
By the early 1600s, the shape of the dumbbell we know today, with two equal weights attached to a handle, had been created. There are three main types of dumbbells:
- Fixed-weight dumbbells are weights shaped like a dumbbell. Cheaper ones are made from cast iron, sometimes covered with rubber or neoprene for comfort. Even cheaper versions are made from a hard plastic shell filled with concrete.
- Adjustable dumbbells have a metal bar with a patterned center for a better grip. Weight plates can be added to the ends and secured with clips or collars. These can be adjusted easily, sometimes by turning a dial or moving a pin, to change the weight between exercises.
Variations
- Thomas Inch dumbbell, also called "172" (a handle that is 2.38 inches or 60 mm long, and it weighs 172 pounds or 78 kg)
- Millennium dumbbell (a handle that is 2.38 inches or 60 mm long, and it weighs 228 pounds or 103 kg)
- Circus dumbbells were used in old circus shows. They have larger ends and wider handles, and come in many different weights and sizes.
