Environmental issues with coral reefs

Human activities have a big impact on coral reefs, causing many of them to disappear around the world. Things that harm coral reefs include coral mining, pollution, overfishing, blast fishing, and building canals. Other dangers come from diseases, harmful fishing methods, and the warming of oceans.

The ocean helps absorb carbon dioxide, but changes in the air and increased heat can hurt reefs. This leads to ocean acidification and coral bleaching, which can be very harmful to these underwater ecosystems.

Scientists think that between 2020 and 2040, a large portion of all coral reefs—about 70 to 90%—will disappear. The main reasons are warmer ocean waters, more acidic oceans, and pollution. Some believe that new types of corals that can survive higher temperatures might grow, but this could reduce the variety of coral life. In Southeast Asia, almost all reefs are endangered. By the 2030s, it is expected that nearly all reefs will face risks from both human actions and climate change.

Human activities greatly affect coral reefs, causing many to decline around the world. Some of these activities include taking coral for building materials, pollution from land and water, and harmful fishing methods.

Coral reefs also face threats from diseases and the warming of oceans, which can cause bleaching and death of coral. These changes put pressure on the delicate balance of reef ecosystems.

Oil

Causes and effects of oil spills

Oil spills can happen in two main ways: natural and human-made. Natural spills occur when oil leaks from the ocean floor or through erosion, adding about 181 million gallons to the ocean each year. Human activities, like drilling and wars, cause most oil to enter the ocean, leaking around 210 million gallons yearly. These human-caused spills are more harmful, causing sudden changes to ecosystems that take a long time to fix.

When oil spills happen, they can hurt water plants and animals for many years. Oil can block light and oxygen, making it hard for plants to grow. It can also poison animals or stick to them, causing harm. This can lead to serious health problems or even death for marine life.

Oil impacts on coral reef communities

Oil pollution is dangerous to marine life because of its toxic ingredients. Oil spills can happen naturally or from human activities like moving oil around. When animals come into contact with oil, they can suffer from skin irritation, weaker immune systems, and stomach damage.

Oil floating on the surface usually doesn’t affect coral reefs below, but when it sinks, it can cause problems. The tiny oil particles can harm corals and other sea creatures like fish and crabs. Even a small amount of oil can make fish act strangely, which can be unsafe for them and their homes. Oil can also affect how well fish grow, survive, and avoid being caught by predators. Young fish exposed to oil may later develop heart and physical problems.

Oil impacts on coral life and symbiotic relationships

We can see the damage oil spills cause to coral reefs at certain sites, where corals died shortly after being covered in oil. Soft corals are especially vulnerable to oil because of how their cells work. Corals also rely on tiny organisms to protect them from harm, but oil can damage these organisms and make corals more vulnerable.

Oil clean up methods

There are different ways to clean up oil spills. Booms are floating barriers that stop oil from spreading, and skimmers collect oil from the water. Burning oil in place and using chemical treatments are also options, but these can harm marine life. Some chemical treatments have been banned because they damage young corals, though a few are still used. Scientists are studying natural methods using tiny organisms to clean up oil, but these are not yet a sure solution.

Threatened species

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species helps us understand which marine animals are in danger. A species is considered threatened if it is critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable. By 2008, scientists had checked all 845 known reef-building coral species and found that 27% were threatened, 20% were close to being threatened, and 17% did not have enough information.

The coral triangle area has the most coral species and also the most species that are in danger. Losing coral reefs would be very bad for many sea animals and for people who rely on reefs for their jobs and food.

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system. It faces many challenges, including pollution from land, changes in salt levels, climate change, and overfishing. Climate change is the biggest threat to the reef, and by 2018, half of the coral had been lost.

Southeast Asia

Coral reefs in Southeast Asia are threatened by harmful fishing methods, overfishing, pollution, and bleaching. Efforts like education, rules, and protected areas help protect these reefs.

Indonesia

Indonesia has many coral reefs, but they are damaged by bad fishing, tourism, and bleaching. Without help, most of Indonesia's reefs could be lost by 2050.

Philippines

In 2007, experts said only 5% of the Philippines reefs are in excellent condition. The reefs face threats from overfishing and pollution.

Taiwan

Coral reefs in Taiwan are harmed by too many people and pollution. Some corals have turned black from diseases.

Caribbean

Coral diseases have become more common in the Caribbean since 1972. About half of the coral has disappeared since the 1960s. Threats include more people living near the coast, overfishing, pollution, warming oceans, and invasive species. In 2005, half of the Caribbean's reefs were lost in one year because of coral bleaching.

Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System is the second-largest coral reef in the world. It is threatened by climate change, which causes coral bleaching. Recent studies show that deeper reefs are also at risk from bleaching, which was not known before.

Jamaica

Jamaica has important coral reefs that are threatened by overfishing, pollution, natural disasters, and mining. In 2005, many corals bleached due to warm water, and they are recovering slowly.

United States

Florida's reefs are suffering from a serious disease affecting many types of coral. In early 2019, the disease was found spreading along the coast near Key West.

Puerto Rico's reefs are worth about $1.1 billion each year. The U.S. Virgin Islands' reefs are worth about $187 million yearly.

Pacific

United States

Hawaii's reefs are important for tourism, worth about $800 million a year. They are threatened by coral bleaching and warm ocean temperatures, which can cause diseases. The first big bleaching happened in 1996, and warm temperatures have been rising since then.
