Further information: Common gameplay elements in the God of War series
God of War III is an action-adventure game where players control the character Kratos. Players fight enemies using combos, solve puzzles, and navigate environments filled with Greek mythological creatures like centaurs and harpies. To move through the game, players climb walls, jump across gaps, and swing on ropes. Some puzzles are simple, while others need careful timing, much like a music game.
Kratos fights with new weapons, including the Blades of Exile and the Claws of Hades. Each weapon has special magic attacks, such as calling souls to fight. Players also get secondary weapons like the Bow of Apollo, needed to solve puzzles or light dark areas. The game includes special items from earlier games, like Poseidon’s Trident, which help overcome obstacles. Players can switch quickly between weapons and use new combat moves, like grabbing enemies to use them in attacks. After finishing the main story, players can try extra challenges to earn rewards.
Synopsis
God of War III is set in an alternate version of ancient Greece with many gods, Titans, and heroes from myths. The game happens between the events of two other games in the series. Players explore many places such as Mount Olympus, the city of Olympia, and the Underworld.
The main character is Kratos, a Spartan demigod who becomes the God of War. He seeks revenge against Zeus, the King of the Gods and his father. Along the way, Kratos meets many gods and Titans, including Athena, Poseidon, Hades, and Hercules. The story leads Kratos on a journey across Greece as he faces challenges and battles to stop Zeus and change the fate of the world.
Development
The game was directed by Stig Asmussen, who took over after Cory Barlog left the team. Asmussen had previously worked on the earlier games as an artist. The game was announced before the DualShock 3 controller was released, which caused some confusion about controller features.
The developers faced many challenges, especially in creating detailed characters and realistic movements. They used advanced techniques to make the characters look more lifelike and realistic. The game was built using the engine from the previous games but was updated for the PlayStation 3. The game includes seamless loading with no need to install extra files. The story lasts about 10 to 20 hours, depending on the player. The game features many voice actors from the previous games, along with some new ones.
Release
At E3 2009, the God of War III demo was shown, featuring Kratos fighting various creatures on Mount Olympus. The demo became available to PlayStation Network members in October 2009, with additional ways to access it through GameStop and special editions of other games.
God of War III was released in North America on March 16, 2010, followed by Australia, Europe, and Japan in the following weeks. The game was very popular, selling nearly 400,000 copies more than its predecessor in its first week alone. By 2012, it had sold over 5 million copies worldwide. It was also included in special collections and bundles for the PlayStation 3.
Reception
God of War III received very positive reviews. Critics said the game was a great finish to the trilogy, mixing all its best parts into one amazing experience. They praised the large size of the Titans and the detailed graphics, calling it one of the biggest and best-looking games ever made.
The gameplay was also well-liked. Reviewers enjoyed the variety of weapons and the exciting combat. However, some felt the story was simple and did not have many surprising twists. Despite this, many thought the ending was powerful and emotional, giving a satisfying close to Kratos’s story.
The game won many awards, including “Best PS3 Game” and “Best Graphics” at the 2010 Spike Video Game Awards. It was also recognized for its art and animation by other award groups.
