A seven-segment display is a display device that shows digits and some letters. You often see these displays in everyday items like a digital clock or a calculator. They are special because they can clearly show numbers and simple letters using only seven small lights or segments arranged in a rectangle shape.
Because these displays are made simply and cost less than other types, such as a dot matrix display, they are popular for showing basic information. This makes them useful in many devices where showing detailed pictures or many different characters isn’t needed. The choice to use a seven-segment display is often about saving money while still getting the job done.
History
Seven-segment displays have been used to show numbers and some letters for over a hundred years. They were first used in patents from 1903, where a way to send letters and numbers was invented. In the 1910s, they were used in power plants and telephone systems. But they didn’t become really popular until LEDs were invented in the 1970s.
These displays were made with tiny lights or even small bulbs to glow and form numbers. Later, LCD screens took over because they could show more shapes easily. Even so, seven-segment displays are still easy to read and are used in many simple tools like calculators. They have also inspired special fonts and fun ways for kids to write words on calculators.
Implementations
Seven-segment displays can use different technologies to show numbers and letters. These include liquid-crystal display (LCD), light-emitting diode (LED) for each segment, electrochromic display, and other methods such as cold cathode gas discharge (neon), vacuum fluorescent (VFD), and incandescent filaments (Numitron).
In simple LED displays, all the negative or positive terminals of the LEDs are connected to a common pin. This makes it easier to control the display with fewer connections. Some displays even have built-in parts to help with this, while others need each LED connected separately. To save even more connections, multiple-digit displays use a method where only a few pins control all the digits by quickly switching between them. This allows a display with many digits to use far fewer connections than if each digit needed its own set of pins.
Characters
A seven-segment display is made up of seven parts arranged in a rectangle shape. There are two tall parts on each side and three flat parts at the top, middle, and bottom. These parts can light up in different ways to show numbers like 0, 1, 2, and so on. Each part is called a letter from "a" to "g", and sometimes a dot is added to show numbers with parts after the decimal point.
Decimal
The numbers 0 to 9 are the most common things shown on these displays. Each number has a special way the parts light up.
Hexadecimal
Besides numbers, some letters and other symbols can also be shown. This helps in showing more information in a small space.
