Suleman Lalani

Suleman Lalani (born July 18, 1967) is an American politician and medical doctor. He represents district 76 of the Texas House of Representatives. As a member of the Democratic Party, Lalani has made history as one of the first Muslims and South Asian lawmakers in the Texas legislature. His background as both a doctor and a public servant helps him bring unique perspectives to his work, focusing on the needs of his community and promoting important issues for all people in Texas.

Early life and education

Suleman Lalani was born in Pakistan and finished his studies at Sindh Medical College. In the 1990s, he moved to the United States and completed extra training at Baylor College of Medicine. For almost 20 years, he has worked as a doctor, focusing on caring for older adults. He has earned top certifications in his field from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Career

Suleman Lalani first tried to join the Texas House of Representatives in the 26th district but was not elected. Later, he ran for the 76th district in Fort Bend County, which includes Sugar Land. He won and became one of the first Muslim and South Asian members of the Texas House of Representatives together with Salman Bhojani. He was re-elected again in a later vote.

In 2025, Lalani suggested new rules to help raise awareness about keeping people safe from harm at home and to stop certain adults from having guns.
