Thirteen Colonies
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Thirteen Colonies were the British colonies on the Atlantic coast of North America that eventually broke away from the British Crown during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). These colonies came together to form the United States of America. They were grouped into three main areas: the New England Colonies (New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut), the Middle Colonies (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware), and the Southern Colonies (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia).
These colonies were part of British America, which also included areas in the Floridas, the Caribbean, and what is now Canada. Though each colony was governed separately, they shared similar political and legal systems and were mostly populated by Protestant English speakers. The first colony, Virginia, began at Jamestown in 1607. Some colonies were founded for religious freedom, while others were established for business and economic growth.
Over time, the population of the colonies grew greatly, but this growth affected the lives of the region's Native Americans. The British government tried to control the colonies more tightly, leading to tensions. The French and Indian War (1754–1763) added to these problems. As the colonies worked together and shared their concerns, they began to demand their rights as part of England, especially the idea of "no taxation without representation". These disagreements eventually led to the American Revolution, where the colonies united to fight for their independence.

In 1606, King James I of England allowed two groups, the Plymouth Company and the London Company, to create settlements in America. The London Company started the Colony of Virginia in 1607, the first permanent English settlement. The Plymouth Company tried to start a colony but it didn’t last long. Later, Plymouth Colony was founded in 1620 by groups of people looking for religious freedom, known as the Pilgrims. Other countries like the Dutch, Swedish, and French also started colonies, but they eventually joined under English rule. The last of the Thirteen Colonies, the Province of Georgia, was started in 1732. The name “Thirteen Colonies” became common during the American Revolution.
The colonies were organized into three groups: the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies. The New England Colonies included places like Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The Middle Colonies had New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The Southern Colonies were made up of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. These colonies were all part of British America and later came together to form the United States.

```## Thirteen Colonies
The Thirteen Colonies were British settlements along the Atlantic coast of North America. They decided to break away from British rule during the American Revolutionary War, which lasted from 1775 to 1783. After winning their independence, these colonies came together to form the United States of America.
The thirteen colonies were traditionally grouped into three regions. The New England Colonies included New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The Middle Colonies consisted of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The Southern Colonies were made up of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. These colonies were part of a larger area known as British America, which also included lands in the Floridas, the Caribbean, and what is now Canada.
## Population of Thirteen Colonies
Further information: List of colonial and pre-Federal U.S. historical population
The number of people in the Thirteen Colonies grew quickly. By the late 1700s, just before they became the United States, there were almost 2.5 million people. Most of them were farmers, and many lived in small cities that were important for trade. Many of the people came from places like England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, and the Netherlands.
The colonies also had people who were forced to work without pay, known as slavery. This was common in places where crops like tobacco, rice, and indigo were grown. Over time, the number of these people grew because families had many children. Sadly, diseases like [malaria](/wiki/Malaria), [smallpox](/wiki/Smallpox), and [yellow fever](/wiki/Yellow_fever) were common and made many people, especially children, very sick. People tried different ways to help the sick, but medicine back then was not very advanced.
The main points from the context are that the Thirteen Colonies were British colonies on the Atlantic coast of North America that broke away from the British Crown during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) to form the United States of America. The colonies are grouped into New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies with specific states in each.
First, I need to check if this article is UNSAFE_ARTICLE. The critical note says to reject articles primarily about sexual offenses, explicit content, detailed abuse mechanics, graphic violence, etc. The article is about historical colonies and their formation into the USA. There's no mention of sensitive topics here, so it's safe.
Next, the structure rules: I must keep the same top-level section titles as the source. The user provided a summary that mentions the colonies breaking away, groupings, and being part of British America. The section heading is likely "## Thirteen Colonies" but the user says to merge all subsections into two paragraphs. The source doesn't specify subsections here, so I'll just have one section.
The user says to write at most two short paragraphs for the section prose, merging subsections. The original content has no subsections mentioned, so I'll summarize the key ideas.
Key points to include:
- Thirteen Colonies were British colonies on the Atlantic coast.
- They broke away from Britain in the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783).
- Formed the United States of America.
- Grouped into New England (NH, MA, RI, CT), Middle (NY, NJ, PA, DE), Southern (MD, VA, NC, SC, GA).
- Part of British America which included other territories.
I need to use plain language for ages 8+. Avoid jargon, technical details. Use past tense because the source uses past tense ("were", "broke away", etc.).
Links: The user says to preserve every link from the source. Looking at the context, there are no links mentioned in the provided text. The user says if there are any links like text, keep them, but in this case, the input doesn't show any. So no links to add.
Also, check for any sensitive content: no suicide, graphic violence, sexual content. The topic is historical, so it's fine. No need to reframe anything here because it's about colonies and formation of a country.
Now, write two paragraphs max. First paragraph: introduce the Thirteen Colonies and their role in forming the USA after the Revolutionary War. Second paragraph: describe the three groupings and the states in each.
Make sure to use simple words. For example, "broke away" can be "decided to leave" but keep the historical term "Revolutionary War" as it's appropriate for J8.
Check for any prohibited terms: the user says not to use words like "sexual", "predator", etc. This text doesn't have any, so it's safe.
Also, verify dates: 1775–1783 is correct, so keep as is.
Finally, output format: plain Markdown, no YAML, no preamble. Just the section heading and content.
The user mentioned hatnotes: if the source has "Main article:" lines, keep them. But the context doesn't show any, so skip hatnotes.
Putting it all together:
## Thirteen Colonies
The Thirteen Colonies were British settlements along the Atlantic coast of North America. In the American Revolutionary War from 1775 to 1783, these colonies decided to leave British rule and joined together to form the United States of America.
The colonies were traditionally grouped into three regions: the New England Colonies included New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut; the Middle Colonies had New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware; and the Southern Colonies consisted of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. These areas were part of British America, which also included lands in the Floridas, the Caribbean, and parts of what is now Canada.
That's two paragraphs. I kept it simple, used past tense, and included all key points without any sensitive content. No links were present in the source to preserve. Also, no tables or placeholders mentioned, so nothing to include there.## Thirteen Colonies
Historiography
Further information: Historiography of the British Empire
The first British Empire was centered on the Thirteen Colonies, which drew many settlers from Britain. From the 1900s to the 1930s, a group of historians called the "Imperial School" believed the empire brought many good things and helped the colonies grow well. They included Herbert L. Osgood, George Louis Beer, Charles M. Andrews, and Lawrence Gipson.
When Britain lost the American colonies in 1783, it changed its colonial policies, ending what we call the First British Empire. Historians say this loss led Britain to focus more on areas in Asia. Since the 1960s, most historians have studied how American identity and pride grew, leading the colonies to break away from Britain. They use different ways to understand this time, like looking at events in the Atlantic world, studying community life, or exploring ideas about government and law in the new United States.
