In October 2024, Zohran Mamdani announced he wanted to become the mayor of New York City. He talked about many ideas to help people, like making city buses free and stopping rent from going up too much. He also wanted to build many new homes that people could afford and help families with free childcare. He also wanted to make sure everyone earned a good amount of money and thought about ways to make city services better.
Mamdani ran against another person, Andrew Cuomo, but many people thought Cuomo would win. However, Mamdani won because many voters chose him when they had to rank their favorite candidates. After winning, some people made unfair comments about him, but many young people and immigrants liked his ideas.
Mayor-elect and transition
After winning the election in November 2025, Mamdani started getting his team ready to help him work as mayor. He chose some important people to help him, but one person had to leave because she said something hurtful about others. Mamdani met with the president and they talked about making the city safer and more affordable.
Mamdani's mayoralty was expected to be the city's 111th, but a December 2025 review of city archives established that the enumeration of New York City mayors had omitted Matthias Nicoll's second mayoralty, and that Mamdani would therefore be the city's 112th mayor.
