Biathlon at the Winter Olympics

Biathlon is a fun and exciting sport at the Winter Olympics. It started in 1960 in Olympic Valley, California. The first race was for men only, and it was 20 kilometers long. Over time, more races were added, including team events where athletes work together.

In 1992, women joined the biathlon competition in Albertville. They started with a 15-kilometer race and a shorter sprint race. Later, new types of races like pursuit and mass start were added to make things even more exciting.

Each biathlon race is a mix of cross-country skiing and shooting. Athletes ski and then stop to shoot at targets. If they miss, they have to do a small penalty run. This mix of skills makes biathlon special and challenging.

Before biathlon, there was an event called military patrol. It was held at four Winter Olympic Games: 1924, 1928, 1936, and 1948. The International Biathlon Union thinks military patrol was the start of biathlon.

Biathlon has grown over the years, with many countries sending athletes to compete. Some of the top countries in biathlon include Norway, Germany, and France. These athletes train very hard to become the best at this exciting sport.
