The Bundestag
The Bundestag is Germany’s main parliament. It is where people make laws for the country. The Bundestag is chosen by German citizens who are 18 and older. They vote every four years to pick the members.
The Bundestag works with another group called the Bundesrat to help make laws. Together, they decide what rules the country will follow.
The Bundestag meets in a big building called the Reichstag in Berlin. This building has a famous dome that you can visit. Since 1999, the Bundestag has met here.
Why It Matters
The Bundestag is very important because it helps make most of the country’s laws. It also controls the money and watches over the leaders of Germany. The head of the Bundestag is called the president. Since 2025, this role has been held by Julia Klöckner from the CDU/CSU.
A Short History
The first Bundestag started in 1949 after Germany created new rules for its government. Before that, Germany had different ways of making decisions. After World War II, Germany wanted a new and fair way to choose leaders. The Bundestag was part of this new plan.
Fun Fact
Did you know the Bundestag can meet anywhere in Germany? Before it had its own building, it met in different cities like Bonn and even Cologne! Now, it meets in the beautiful Reichstag building in Berlin.
