Byzantine Architecture

Byzantine architecture is the special way buildings were made in the old Byzantine Empire. This empire is also called the Eastern Roman Empire. It began around the year AD 330 when Constantine the Great made a new capital city called Constantinople.

Byzantine buildings looked a bit like older Roman buildings. They used arches, big round roofs called domes, and shiny decorations on the walls. Some walls had tiny pictures made of stone or glass called mosaics. These mosaics often had a golden background that made the rooms feel warm and special.

One of the most famous Byzantine buildings is the Hagia Sophia. It means “Holy Wisdom” in Greek. This huge building has a very tall dome and was very important for Christianity. It showed off the skills of Byzantine builders.

Byzantine buildings spread to many places like Ravenna, Venice, and Moscow. They used bricks, stone, and beautiful designs to make churches and other important places. Even today, we can see how these old buildings influenced many other styles of architecture around the world.

Byzantine architecture helps us remember the art and skills of people who lived long ago. Their churches with tall domes and golden walls still amaze us!
