Welcome to Calgary

Calgary is a big, busy city in Canada. It is the largest city in the province of Alberta. Over one million people live in Calgary, making it the third-largest city in all of Canada, after Toronto and Montreal.

Nature Around Calgary

Calgary is a special place because it sits between the Rocky Mountain Foothills and the wide, open Canadian Prairies. The city is where the Bow River and the Elbow River meet. Because of this, Calgary is very close to the beautiful Canadian Rockies. It is halfway between Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, and the Canada–United States border.

Jobs and Buildings

Calgary is an important place for many jobs. People work in energy, finance, film, transportation, technology, and tourism. The city has many tall buildings, especially in the downtown area. One fun fact is that in 1988, Calgary held the Olympic Winter Games. Athletes from all over the world came to compete in fun sports like ice hockey and figure skating.

Naming Calgary

The city of Calgary was named after Calgary Castle in Scotland. A man named Colonel James Macleod, who worked for the North-West Mounted Police, suggested the name. He spent his summers in the area and thought it was a good name for a place called Fort Calgary.

A Place Full of People

Many different kinds of people live in Calgary. In 2021, about one-third of the people were immigrants—people born outside of Canada. Some came from the Philippines, India, China, and the United Kingdom. The city has many neighborhoods, and some parts were once small towns before joining Calgary.

Fun Things to Do

Calgary has many fun places to visit. Downtown has restaurants, shops, and cultural spots. You can visit the Calgary Tower, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, and the National Music Centre. There are also big parks like Fish Creek Provincial Park and Nose Hill Park. Because Calgary is close to the Rocky Mountains, it is a great place for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding.

Sports Teams

Calgary has some exciting sports teams! The Calgary Flames play hockey, and the Calgary Stampeders play football. There are also teams for lacrosse, soccer, and more. People in Calgary love to watch and play sports.

Calgary is a wonderful city with lots to see and do. It is a place where nature, jobs, and fun come together!
