Guinea-Bissau is a small country in West Africa. It is next to Senegal to the north and Guinea to the southeast. The Atlantic Ocean is on its west side. It is a little bigger than Belgium.
A Land of Many People
Guinea-Bissau has many different groups of people. The largest groups are the Fula and Mandinka. Other groups include the Balanta, Papel, and Manjaco. Many people also have mixed heritage from Portuguese and African ancestors. The country has about 2 million people, and many of them are young—over 40% are under 15 years old!
Languages and Cultures
The official language is Portuguese. But most people also speak Guinea-Bissau Creole, which helps everyone talk to each other. Other languages spoken include Fula, Balanta, and Mandinka. Islam and Christianity are the main religions, but many people also follow traditional African beliefs.
