What is a Herbivore?
A herbivore is an animal that loves to eat plants. These animals enjoy munching on foliage, fruits, and seeds. They have special teeth that help them chew plant food. For example, horses and cattles have wide, flat teeth for grinding grass and tree bark.
Helping Hands Inside
Many herbivores have tiny bacteria inside them called gut flora. These tiny helpers break down hard-to-digest parts of plants, like cellulose. This helps the animal get more nutrients from the plants they eat.
Why We Know About Them
Herbivores are important because they eat plants and give energy to the food chain. They are the first step in the chain. Animals that eat herbivores, called carnivores, depend on them for food. Herbivores help plants grow in many ways, too. Some animals spread plant seeds while they eat, helping plants reproduce.
Fun Facts
Herbivores eat plants in many ways. Some, like cows, grazing on grass. Others, like moose, browsing on leaves and twigs from trees. Some animals do both! Scientists have special rules to understand how animals pick their food. One rule says bigger animals need less food for their size than smaller animals.
Herbivores and plants have a special relationship. Plants sometimes have thorns or make bad-tasting chemicals to protect themselves. Herbivores find ways to eat these plants anyway. This back-and-forth helps keep nature balanced.
