Jonah

Jonah was a special person from a long time ago in Israel. His story is one of the most loved stories ever told. It is written in the Book of Jonah, which is part of the old books called the minor prophets.

God asked Jonah to go to a big city named Nineveh and tell the people there to change their ways. But Jonah did not want to go. He tried to run away on a boat to a place called Tarshish.

A big storm came while Jonah was on the boat. The people on the boat put Jonah into the water because they thought he was the reason for the storm. A very large fish came and swallowed Jonah. Jonah stayed inside the fish for three days. Inside the fish, Jonah prayed to God. God told the fish to let Jonah out, and the fish did.

This time, Jonah went to Nineveh as God asked. He told the people that in forty days the city would be destroyed. The people of Nineveh believed Jonah. They started to pray and change their ways, even the king! God saw that they were sorry and decided not to destroy the city.

Jonah’s story is important in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In the New Testament, Jesus talked about Jonah’s time inside the fish. In the Quran, Jonah is also a prophet that people respect.

People have told Jonah’s story for many years. It has been painted, carved, and even made into movies. The story teaches us about listening to others and changing for the better. Jonah’s adventure with the big fish is remembered and loved by many around the world.
