Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes was a famous American poet and writer. He was born on February 1, 1901, in Joplin, Missouri. Hughes helped create something called jazz poetry and was very important during a time called the Harlem Renaissance.
Hughes grew up in the Midwest. He loved to write from a very young age. Later, he moved to New York City and studied at Columbia University. Although he left before finishing, he kept writing. His first book of poems, called The Weary Blues, came out in 1926.
Besides poetry, Hughes wrote plays, stories, and books about real life. During a time called the civil rights movement, he wrote for a newspaper called The Chicago Defender for many years.
Hughes came from a family with mixed backgrounds. He spent much of his childhood in Lawrence, Kansas, mostly with his grandmother. After she passed away, he lived in different cities, including Cleveland and Ohio. He started writing poetry and stories when he was very young, and his teachers encouraged him to keep writing.
Hughes is remembered for his beautiful words that showed the life and spirit of African Americans. His poems and stories made people understand and respect different experiences. Today, many people still read and enjoy his work.
