Member states of the United Nations
The United Nations is a big group of countries that work together. It has 193 member states. These countries are from all around the world. They join the United Nations by agreeing to follow special rules called the United Nations Charter.
Why we know about it
The United Nations helps countries talk to each other and solve problems peacefully. It also works on important things like helping people in need, protecting the environment, and making sure everyone has fair laws. The United Nations was started in 1945 after a very difficult time in the world. It began with 51 countries, and now many more have joined.
Some interesting facts
- The United Nations has a special meeting place called the United Nations General Assembly where all member countries have a say.
- Some countries joined the United Nations before they were fully independent. For example, Belarus and Ukraine were parts of the Soviet Union when they joined.
- The United Nations also lets some groups that are not countries, like the Holy See (which rules Vatican City), watch its meetings. They are called observer states.
The United Nations is important because it helps keep peace and makes the world a better place for everyone.
