The New York Stock Exchange
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is a big place where people buy and sell pieces of companies. It is in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Many people keep their savings here, making it very important.
The NYSE started a long time ago, in 1792, with an agreement called the Buttonwood Agreement. Back then, people traded government bonds and bank stocks. Over the years, it grew into the largest stock exchange in the world.
People can visit the New York Stock Exchange Building, a special building designed by the architect George B. Post. It is a National Historic Landmark and a New York City designated landmark. The NYSE is owned by the Intercontinental Exchange, a big holding company.
Every day, the NYSE opens at 9:30 am and closes at 4:00 pm, except on holidays like New Year's Day and Christmas. Special guests often ring the opening and closing bells, which mark the start and end of each trading day. This tradition makes each day exciting and celebratory.
