North Island

The North Island is one of the two big islands of New Zealand. It is next to the South Island, and they are separated by the Cook Strait. This island has many cities and beautiful places to see.

You can find twelve big cities here, from north to south: Whangārei, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Gisborne, New Plymouth, Napier, Hastings, Whanganui, Palmerston North, and Wellington, which is the capital of New Zealand.

People have many names for the North Island. In Māori, it is called Te Ika-a-Māui, meaning "the fish of Māui." This comes from a story where the demigod Māui fished and pulled up this big land from the sea. Another old name is Aotearoa, which means "land of the long white cloud." Today, we usually just call it the North Island.

The North Island has many wonderful spots. There are big lakes like Lake Taupō, tall mountains like Mount Ruapehu, and famous forests such as Tongariro National Park and the Waipoua Kauri Forest. It is a place full of nature and exciting places to visit.
