The Saeima

The Saeima is the parliament of the Republic of Latvia. It has 100 members who are chosen by people in Latvia in elections every four years. These members come from different political parties.

Elections for the Saeima happen on the first Saturday in October. The most recent elections were in October 2022. Today, the leader of the Saeima is Daiga Mieriņa from the Union of Greens and Farmers.

The word "Saeima" means "a gathering" or "a meeting." It comes from old meeting ways from places like Poland and Lithuania. People in Latvia have used this word for a long time.

People in Latvia who are 18 or older can vote for the Saeima. To be a member, someone must be at least 21 years old. The Saeima works to help make rules and decisions for Latvia.

The Saeima has a special book called the Rules of Order that guides how it works. It is an important part of Latvia's government.
