Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo is the capital and largest city of the Dominican Republic. It is the biggest city in the Caribbean and has over four million people living in the area around it.
Santo Domingo was started in 1496 by the Spanish Empire. This makes it the oldest European city in the Americas. Many important things happened here first in the New World, like the first university, cathedral, and fortress. The old part of the city, called the Colonial Zone, is very special and was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The city is very important for the Dominican Republic. It is the center for culture, money, government, and trade. Santo Domingo is also the main port of the country, where big ships come with passengers and goods.
Santo Domingo has many beautiful parks for people to enjoy. Some well-known parks include Mirador Norte Park in the north, Mirador Sur Park in the southwest, and Mirador del Este, which is near the Ozama river and has the Columbus Lighthouse. You can also find Independencia Park and Colón Park in the Zona Colonial area.
The city has many universities, more than any other city in the Dominican Republic. The Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), started in 1538, is the oldest university in the Americas.
Santo Domingo has a modern metro system with underground and elevated tracks. It is the largest in the Caribbean and Central America. The metro helps reduce traffic and makes it easier for people to travel. The city also has a cable car system that connects different areas.
Baseball is very popular in Santo Domingo. The city has two teams in the Dominican Professional Baseball League: the Tigres del Licey and the Leones del Escogido. Both teams play at the Estadio Quisqueya.
