What Is a Subspecies?

A subspecies is a small group inside a bigger group called a species. Animals or plants in a subspecies live in different places and look a little different, like size or shape, but they can still have babies together.

Names and Rules

Scientists give special names to subspecies. For example, a big cat called the leopard has a scientific name: Panthera pardus. But a subspecies, like the Indian leopard, gets an extra name: Panthera pardus fusca. All these names are written in italics to show they are special science words.

Why Subspecies Matter

Subspecies help scientists understand how animals and plants change when they live in far-away places. Even though they look a little different, they are still part of the same big family. This helps us learn more about zoology and how living things fit together in nature.
