Liechtenstein joined the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to August 21, 2016. Liechtenstein often joins the Summer Olympic Games, but missed two times. They did not go to the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and joined the United States-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

In 2016, Liechtenstein sent two swimmers, Christoph Meier and Julia Hassler, and a tennis player, Stephanie Vogt. Julia Hassler had swum before, in the 2012 Summer Olympics. She carried Liechtenstein's flag in the opening ceremony. Even with hard work, Liechtenstein has not won a medal at the Summer Olympics yet.

Background

Liechtenstein took part in seventeen Summer Olympic Games, starting from the 1936 games in Berlin, Germany, up to the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The most athletes from Liechtenstein competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. No athlete from Liechtenstein has ever won a medal in the Summer Olympics, but they have won medals in the Winter Olympic Games. All athletes from Liechtenstein in the 2016 Summer Olympics competed because they were invited by FINA or the ITF.
