2026 FIFA World Cup

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

Hard Rock Stadium set up for the Club World Cup soccer tournament.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the 23rd FIFA World Cup, a big soccer tournament where national teams from around the world compete. It will happen from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in sixteen cities across three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This will be the first time the World Cup is hosted by three nations and the first to have 48 teams instead of 32.

The United 2026 bid was chosen over a bid from Morocco during a vote at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow. Mexico will become the first country to host or co-host the men’s World Cup three times, having already hosted in 1970 and 1986. The United States hosted the men’s World Cup in 1994, while this will be Canada’s first time hosting or co-hosting the men’s tournament. Canada, Mexico, and the United States all qualified automatically as host nations. Other teams making their World Cup debut in 2026 include Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan. Argentina is the defending champion, having won the 2022 World Cup.

Format and expansion

The idea to make the FIFA World Cup bigger was talked about as early as 2013. Some people thought it would mean fewer good games and was more about politics than sports.

This time, the World Cup will have 48 teams instead of 32. They will be split into twelve groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-place teams will move on to a new round of 32 teams. This will be the first time the World Cup has had this many teams. There will be more games—104 in total—and the tournament will last longer, 39 days instead of 32. Each team will still play three games in the group stage.

Host selection

Main articles: United 2026 FIFA World Cup bid and Morocco 2026 FIFA World Cup bid

The FIFA Council changed its rules many times between 2013 and 2017 about which countries could host the World Cup. In the end, only certain parts of the world were allowed to bid for the 2026 World Cup. These included North America, Africa, South America, and Oceania. Europe and Asia were not allowed because recent World Cups were held there.

Co-hosting the World Cup was allowed for the first time since 2002. Canada, Mexico, and the United States first thought about bidding alone, but then decided to work together. Their joint bid became the United bid. The final vote happened on June 13, 2018, in Moscow. The United bid won with 134 votes, while the Morocco bid got 65 votes.

Venues

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by sixteen cities across three countries: eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. This will be the first time the tournament is held in three nations and will feature 48 teams, more than ever before.

Many stadiums were considered, but sixteen were chosen to host the matches. Some of these stadiums will have their artificial turf replaced with grass for the event. Four stadiums have retractable roofs to control the climate inside, while others are open-air. The final match will be held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Teams

Qualification

In 2022, it was confirmed that Canada, Mexico, and the United States would automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as hosts. Six teams from CONCACAF, the region that includes these countries, will take part in the tournament. A special playoff tournament with six teams from different regions will decide the last two spots for the World Cup. This will be the first World Cup where all six football regions have at least one team, and the first time every region has a team in the finals since 2010.

Twenty-six of the 48 teams that will play in the 2026 World Cup also played in the 2022 tournament. Some teams will be making their first appearance, such as Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan. Other teams returning after many years include Austria, Norway, Scotland, Turkey, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, Paraguay, South Africa, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ivory Coast, Colombia, Egypt, Panama, and Sweden. Italy did not qualify for the third time in a row, and several teams that were in the 2022 tournament, like Cameroon, Costa Rica, Denmark, Poland, Serbia, and Wales, will not be participating.

The teams that qualified, sorted by region:

Squads

Before the tournament, teams will name a provisional squad of between 35 and 55 players. Final squads must be submitted by June 2. If a player becomes injured or ill and cannot play, they can be replaced by another player from the provisional squad until 24 hours before the team's first match. An injured or ill goalkeeper can be replaced by another goalkeeper from the provisional squad at any time during the tournament.

Draw

The draw for the tournament took place on December 5, 2025, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The 48 teams were divided into four pots of 12 teams each. Pot 1 included the three host nations and the top nine teams from the November 2025 FIFA Men's World Ranking. Pots 2, 3, and 4 had the remaining teams based on their rankings. The winners of the UEFA playoffs and the inter-confederation playoffs were not known at the time of the draw and were placed in Pot 4. The 12 groups were formed by selecting one team from each pot. FIFA tried to make sure no group had more than one team from the same region, except for UEFA, where each group could have one or two teams.

Mexico will play the opening match at Estadio Azteca on June 11. Canada and the United States will play on June 12. The draw made sure that top-ranked teams like Spain, Argentina, France, and England were placed in different paths of the knockout bracket so they could only meet in the final or later stages.

Ranking of third-placed teams

First match(es) will be played: June 11, 2026. Source: FIFA
Rules for classification: 1) Points; 2) Goal difference; 3) Goals scored; 4) Team conduct score; 5) Latest FIFA ranking; 6) Previous FIFA ranking(s).

The specific match-ups involving the third-placed teams depend on which eight third-placed teams qualify for the round of 32. The 495 possible combinations were published in Annex C of the tournament regulations.

Tie-breaking criteria for group stage ranking
The ranking of teams in each group is determined by the points obtained in all group matches. If two or more teams are equal on points, the following criteria are used to determine the ranking:
Most points obtained in the group matches played between the teams concerned;
Superior goal difference in the group matches played between the teams concerned;
Most goals scored in the group matches played between the teams concerned;
If, after having applied criteria a to c, teams still had an equal ranking, criteria a to c are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams who are still level to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria d to h apply.
Superior goal difference in all group matches;
Most goals scored in all group matches;
Highest team conduct ("fair play") score in all group matches (only one deduction can be applied to a player or team coach/official in a single match):
Yellow card: −1 point;
Indirect red card (second yellow card): −3 points;
Direct red card: −4 points;
Yellow card and direct red card: −5 points;
Better position in the most recent FIFA Men's World Ranking;
Better position in progressively older FIFA Men's World Rankings until teams can be separated.

Knockout stage

The knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature several exciting rounds leading to the final match. The round of 32 will begin on June 28, 2026, with games held in cities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Each match will take place at different times and in various stadiums.

The round of 16 will start on July 4, 2026, followed by the quarterfinals on July 9 and 10. The semifinals are scheduled for July 14 and 15, with the match for third place on July 18. The final match of the tournament will be held on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Statistics

Discipline

If a player or a team official gets a red card, they cannot play in the next match. If they get two yellow cards in the tournament, they also miss the next match. Yellow cards do not carry over after certain points in the tournament.

During the qualifying matches, a player was sent off for violent behavior. He was given a penalty but was allowed to play in the opening World Cup match because part of his penalty was delayed. Later, the rules were changed so that some penalties from qualifying matches would not affect the World Cup tournament itself. This meant that some players would not have to serve their penalties during the World Cup.

Marketing

Branding

The official logo for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was shown on May 17, 2023, at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California. The logo features the number “26” with an image of the FIFA World Cup Trophy in front of it. Each host city also has its own version of the logo, showing local landscapes or culture.

Posters

In April 2025, FIFA showed 16 posters for each host city, celebrating local culture and soccer. On March 3, 2026, the official poster was shown, made by three artists from Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Broadcasting rights

In 2015, FIFA renewed broadcasting rights for the United States and Canada with Fox, NBCUniversal, and Bell Media. In 2026, FIFA also made deals with TikTok and YouTube to show World Cup videos and matches.

Sponsorships

FIFA will have fan festivals in host cities, showing matches on big screens with live entertainment. Some of these locations include Jersey City, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Houston.

Tickets

Ticket prices for the 2026 FIFA World Cup started at $60 for group matches and went up to $6,730 for the final. FIFA used a system that changes ticket prices based on demand. Tickets went on sale in phases, with a final sale starting 50 days before the tournament. By then, over five million tickets had sold.

Merchandise

On October 2, 2025, FIFA announced FIFA Heroes as the official video game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It will be available on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox in 2026.

Awards

FIFA Peace Prize

The FIFA Peace Prize is an award given by FIFA to honor people who help bring peace and unity. It started in 2025 with the idea that football can bring people together.

In December 2025, the prize was given to the United States president Donald Trump during the event to decide the groups for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Washington, D.C.. FIFA said this was because of his work in helping to stop fights between countries and talking with leaders to solve problems.

Prize money

In April 2026, FIFA announced how much money teams would get for playing in the World Cup. The total amount for this tournament will be $871 million, which is $431 million more than the last World Cup. Besides the money teams earn based on how well they do, each team also gets $10 million for qualifying and $2.5 million to help prepare before the competition even starts.

Concerns

Climate

In January 2025, a university in Belfast warned about possible heat problems for host cities. They suggested that games should start later in the day to avoid the sun’s strongest rays. During a 2025 tournament in the United States, some games faced very hot weather, between 32°C and 39°C, causing delays. In response, FIFA planned to give players three-minute breaks in each half of the 2026 World Cup to rest and stay hydrated. These breaks would also allow for commercials.

There were also worries about the environment. Adding more teams and traveling between cities might create more pollution. A report said the tournament could create almost double the pollution of past World Cups, equal to what 6.5 million cars would create in a year.

Immigration policy in the United States

During the time when the United States was choosing to host the World Cup, there were worries about rules for people coming from certain countries. Some leaders said that all teams and fans should be welcome. In 2025, a rule was put in place that allowed players, coaches, and staff from certain countries to enter the United States for the World Cup, even if normal rules would stop them. However, regular fans from those countries might still have trouble getting visas to watch the games.

Potential boycott over Greenland

After the United States made statements about Greenland in early 2026, some European leaders talked about not supporting the World Cup. This showed growing tension between FIFA and some European soccer groups.

Iran’s participation

In late 2025, Iran said it might not join the World Cup because its team leader couldn’t get a visa to enter the United States. Later, Iran decided to join after all. However, with conflicts happening around that time, there were more worries about Iran’s safety and whether they could travel. Some people even suggested moving Iran’s games to Mexico, but FIFA said no. Iran’s leader later said they might not join, but FIFA still said Iran would be part of the tournament.

Human rights and security in Mexico

Labor rights

In 2025, workers’ groups worried that FIFA stopped checks on how workers were treated at a stadium in Mexico City that was being fixed up for the World Cup. This raised concerns about fair treatment of workers.

Unrest in Jalisco

In February 2026, after a leader of a criminal group was caught in Mexico, there were violent protests and attacks in several cities, including Guadalajara where some World Cup games were planned. Despite this, FIFA said games would go on as planned, and Mexico promised to keep fans safe by sending extra troops.

Final match halftime show

In 2024, FIFA announced a big halftime show for the final game, similar to shows in American football. Some people liked the idea because it could attract more fans and money. But others worried it might change the normal flow of the game and not let players rest properly during halftime.

Decentralized host committees in the United States

Each of the 11 cities in the United States hosting games set up their own plans separately. This meant that each city had to handle its own costs for things like safety and transportation. Some cities, like Foxborough, had trouble getting enough money for security and had to find solutions quickly.
