Johannes Kepler (27 December 1571 – 15 November 1630) was a German polymath who was an astronomer, mathematician, astrologer, natural philosopher and music theorist. He is a key figure in the 17th-century Scientific Revolution, best known for his laws of planetary motion, and his books Astronomia nova, Harmonice Mundi, and Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae. The variety and impact of his work made Kepler one of the founders and fathers of modern astronomy, the scientific method, natural science, and modern science. He has been described as the "father of science fiction" for his novel Somnium.

Kepler was a mathematics teacher at a seminary school in Graz, where he became an associate of Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg. Later he became an assistant to the astronomer Tycho Brahe in Prague, and eventually the imperial mathematician to Emperor Rudolf II and his two successors Matthias and Ferdinand II. He also taught mathematics in Linz, and was an adviser to General Wallenstein.

Kepler lived in an era when there was no clear distinction between astronomy and astrology, but there was a strong division between astronomy (a branch of mathematics within the liberal arts) and physics (a branch of natural philosophy). Kepler also incorporated religious arguments and reasoning into his work, motivated by the religious conviction and belief that God had created the world according to an intelligible plan that is accessible through the natural light of reason. Kepler described his new astronomy as "celestial physics", as "an excursion into Aristotle's Metaphysics", and as "a supplement to Aristotle's On the Heavens", transforming the ancient tradition of physical cosmology by treating astronomy as part of a universal mathematical physics. Additionally, he did fundamental work in the field of optics, being named the father of modern optics, in particular for his Astronomiae pars optica. He also invented an improved version of the refracting telescope, the Keplerian telescope, which became the foundation of the modern refracting telescope, while also improving on the telescope design by Galileo Galilei, who mentioned Kepler's discoveries in his work. He postulated the Kepler conjecture. Kepler influenced among others Isaac Newton, providing one of the foundations for his theory of universal gravitation.

Early life

Johannes Kepler was born on 27 December 1571, in the city of Weil der Stadt, now part of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. His family faced financial difficulties, and his father left home when Johannes was young. Kepler showed great talent in mathematics from an early age. He observed important astronomical events, like a bright comet and a lunar eclipse, as a child. However, he suffered from smallpox, which affected his vision and hands.

Kepler studied at several schools and later attended the University of Tübingen. There, he learned about different theories of how planets move, and he became interested in the idea that the Sun was important to planetary motion. Though he wanted to become a minister, he was not ordained due to his beliefs. Instead, he took a teaching job in Graz, Austria, where he began his work on understanding the universe.

During his time in Graz, Kepler married Barbara Müller and started a family. He also wrote books and shared his ideas about astronomy with other scholars. However, religious changes in the area made it difficult for him to stay, so he moved to Prague to work with the famous astronomer Tycho Brahe.

Scientific career

Once he moved to Prague, Johannes Kepler worked with a famous astronomer named Tycho. After Tycho passed away, Kepler took over his job and began working on important astronomical projects. This period became the most productive time in Kepler's life.

As the imperial mathematician, Kepler gave advice to the emperor, Rudolf II, especially during difficult political times. Although Kepler did not fully believe in detailed astrological predictions, he created horoscopes for many people. Kepler could practice his Lutheran faith freely due to his position at court. He made friends with other scholars and continued his important work in astronomy.

In 1604, a very bright new star appeared in the sky. Kepler observed it carefully and later wrote a book about it, describing its features and discussing what it might mean for our understanding of the universe. He also wrote a imaginative story called The Dream, exploring what it might be like to see Earth from another planet.

Later life

Troubles

During Johannes Kepler's time in Prague, tensions between different religious and political groups were growing. Kepler considered moving back to Württemberg, his homeland, but faced difficulties in getting a new position there. His wife, Barbara, fell ill and later died, and their children also faced health problems. Kepler stayed in Prague for a while but eventually moved to Linz in Austria to take up a teaching and mathematics position.

Linz (1612–1626)

In Linz, Kepler took on several roles, including finishing important star charts called the Rudolphine Tables, though they were not published until 1627. He also faced religious challenges, as some local leaders disagreed with his religious views. Kepler married again and had more children, though some of them did not survive to adulthood.

In 1615, Kepler's mother was accused of causing harm to someone by giving them a bad drink. Kepler worked hard to defend her, and after several years and trials, she was finally cleared of the accusations and released in 1621. She passed away a few months later.

Impact of war

Kepler lived through difficult times as wars began in the region. In 1618, a big conflict called the Thirty Years' War started. Kepler had to leave Linz for a time to help his mother and protect his family during the fighting. Later, he returned to Linz and continued his work.

While in Linz, Kepler wrote many important books. He worked on understanding the dates of historical events, studied how to measure different shapes, and wrote about planets and stars. One of his big discoveries was a rule about how planets move around the sun, which we now call Kepler's Third Law. He also wrote about using special math tools to make calculations easier.

Ulm and Sagan 1626–1630

Kepler moved to Ulm to finish printing his important star charts. Later, he went to Sagan where he hoped to find a more stable job. However, he still struggled with money problems. In 1630, he traveled to Regensburg to try to collect money he was owed, but he fell ill and passed away there in November at the age of 59.

Christianity

Kepler believed that the world was created in an organized way and that humans could understand the rules that govern nature. He also supported kindness and understanding between different Christian groups, believing that all people should get along regardless of their specific religious beliefs.

Astronomy

Kepler wrote several important books about stars and planets. His first book, Mysterium Cosmographicum, explained his idea that the shapes of space could be described using special geometric forms. He believed this showed a plan made by a higher power for the universe.

Later, Kepler studied the movement of the planet Mars very carefully. This work led to his book Astronomia Nova, where he shared two important rules about how planets move. He discovered that planets travel in paths called ellipses, not perfect circles, and that they move faster when they are closer to the Sun.

Kepler also wrote Epitome of Copernican Astronomy, which explained his ideas about the solar system in three books. Finally, he created the Rudolphine Tables, a detailed guide to where planets and stars would appear in the sky, which was finished in 1623 but published later.

Tides and Gravity

Johannes Kepler wrote about how the Moon affects the tides in several of his books. In one book from 1601, he noted that water levels change with the Moon's phases. In another book written in 1608 but published later, he guessed that the Moon pulls on Earth’s water like a magnet.

In a book from 1609, Kepler described gravity as a force that pulls objects together. He believed that the Earth and the Moon pull on each other, and this pull affects the tides. He thought that if the Earth stopped pulling its water, all the ocean would move toward the Moon.

Other scientists had different ideas. For example, Galileo Galilei did not agree with Kepler’s thoughts on gravity and tides. Kepler felt that Galileo’s ideas did not explain why tides change with the Moon’s phases.

Astrology

Kepler thought astrology was very important, just like astronomy. Even though he sometimes made fun of it, he still spent a lot of time writing about it. He tried to make astrology more scientific by studying how the Sun, Moon, and planets might affect us.

In one of his books, De Fundamentis, Kepler talked about how the Earth might have a kind of feeling about the shapes made by the stars and planets, even if it doesn’t understand them like we do. He also believed that events like eclipses could be important signs because they might upset the Earth’s natural balance.

Later, Kepler wrote another book called Tertius Interveniens where he tried to find a middle ground between people who thought astrology was too important and those who thought it wasn’t important at all. He said that while many old astrology rules were not useful, there might still be some real clues hidden in them for careful scientists to discover.

Music

Johannes Kepler believed that shapes and patterns helped God design the world. In his book Harmonice Mundi from 1619, he tried to explain nature—especially space and stars—using ideas from music. He thought the whole universe had a kind of music, called the “music of the spheres,” which people like Pythagoras and Ptolemy had studied before him.

Kepler looked at special shapes and figures, which are now called Kepler’s solids. He used these ideas to explore music, weather, and how stars move. In the last part of his book, he focused on how planets move, especially how their speed changes with their distance from the Sun. He discovered an important rule: the square of the time it takes for a planet to go around the Sun relates to the cube of its distance from the Sun. This idea later helped scientists understand how gravity works between the Sun and the planets.

Optics

Johannes Kepler studied how light behaves, which helped him understand stars and planets better. He wrote a book called Astronomiae Pars Optica in 1604. In this book, he explained how light gets weaker the farther it travels, how mirrors work, and how pinhole cameras create images. He also discovered that the eye flips images upside down before the brain turns them right side up.

Dioptrice

In 1610, Galileo Galilei used a telescope to discover four moons around Jupiter. Kepler was very excited about this and wrote about it. Later, Kepler used a telescope to study lenses. In 1611, he published a book called Dioptrice. In this book, he explained how different types of lenses work together to make telescopes. He even described a new kind of telescope, now called the Keplerian telescope, which could magnify objects more than Galileo's design.

Mathematics and physics

In 1611, Kepler wrote a short pamphlet called A New Year's Gift of Hexagonal Snow as a gift for his friend. In it, he described the special shape of snowflakes and asked an important question about how to fit round objects together tightly. This idea helped scientists understand crystals better.

Kepler also wrote a book in 1613 about how to measure the space inside containers, like wine barrels. His work on measuring shapes and volumes helped lay the groundwork for calculus, a part of math that deals with how things change. One math rule used today is even called "Kepler's barrel rule" in German.

Legacy

Kepler's laws of planetary motion were not accepted right away. Some famous scientists, like Galileo and René Descartes, ignored his work. Many astronomers had questions about his ideas. Some agreed with parts of his theories but not all.

Other astronomers tested Kepler's ideas using real observations. For example, Pierre Gassendi watched a planet cross in front of the Sun just as Kepler predicted. This helped prove Kepler's theories were correct. After Kepler passed away, his book became very popular and helped spread his ideas across Europe.

Kepler's work has been very important for the history of science. Many books and stories have been written about him. Scientists and writers have studied his life and ideas to understand how science developed. His work has inspired many people, including writers, musicians, and even space missions like the Kepler space telescope.

Johannes Kepler wrote many important books about space and science. Some of his most famous works include Mysterium Cosmographicum (The Sacred Mystery of the Cosmos) from 1596, Astronomia nova (New Astronomy) from 1609, and Harmonice Mundi (Harmony of the Worlds) from 1619. He also wrote about stars, snowflakes, and even wine barrels!

His books helped change how people understand the universe. Many of his works have been collected in a big set called Johannes Kepler Gesammelte Werke, which has 22 volumes.
