Visual arts
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The visual arts are special kinds of art that you can see, like painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, image, filmmaking, design, crafts, and architecture. These arts help us express ideas and feelings in ways that words cannot. People have been creating visual art for thousands of years, and it is found all around the world.
Many different types of art fall under the visual arts. This includes not just fine art like paintings and sculptures, but also applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design, and decorative art. Even crafts like pottery and weaving are part of the visual arts.
For a long time, some people thought only certain kinds of art, like painting and sculpture, were the most important. But during the Arts and Crafts Movement in the late 1800s and early 1900s, artists began to value many kinds of art equally. They believed that everyday objects made by hand were just as beautiful as famous paintings or statues.
Today, visual arts are important because they help us understand history, culture, and our own thoughts and feelings. Whether you are looking at a painting in a museum or designing a cool poster for a school project, you are taking part in the world of visual arts.
Education and training
People who want to work in the visual arts often learn through special schools. In Europe, during the Renaissance, artists began studying in academies, and today many attend art schools after high school. Visual arts are now offered as a choice in most school systems.
In East Asia, learning art for people not planning to become professionals often focused on writing with brushes. In ancient China, writing beautifully was one of the important skills for scholars. Countries like Argentina in Latin America have also made strong efforts to support art education, creating special schools and universities for artists.
Drawing
Main article: Drawing
Drawing is a way to create pictures, illustrations, or graphics using many different tools and methods, both online and offline. Artists use tools like graphite pencils, pens, brushes, colored pencils, crayons, charcoals, pastels, and markers to make marks on a surface. Digital tools such as styluses can also mimic these effects. Common drawing techniques include line drawing, hatching, shading, scribbling, stippling, and blending. Someone very skilled at drawing is called a draftsman.
Drawing and painting have existed for tens of thousands of years. Some of the oldest drawings are from the Upper Paleolithic period, including hand stencils and simple shapes in caves. Famous examples include caves in Lascaux, France, Altamira, Spain, Maros, Sulawesi in Asia, and Gabarnmung, Australia. In ancient Egypt, people drew on papyrus paper to plan paintings or sculptures. Later, in ancient Greece, drawings on vases started as simple shapes and later showed people, especially on black-figure pottery made around the 6th century BC.
As paper became more common in Europe during the 14th century, famous artists like Sandro Botticelli, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci began to see drawing as an important art form on its own, not just a step before painting or sculpting.
Painting
Main article: Painting
Painting is the art of putting colors and shapes on a surface like paper, canvas, or a wall. Artists use painting to show their ideas, tell stories, or share feelings. They might paint people, places, or even things that are not real. Some paintings are very old, found on walls in caves, and show animals and people from thousands of years ago.
Over time, painting has changed a lot. In places like Italy, artists learned new ways to make their paintings look three-dimensional. Later, artists in countries like Belgium and the Netherlands made paintings that looked very real. In the 1800s, artists in France started painting outside instead of in studios, using quick brush strokes to show how they saw the world. Today, there are many different styles of painting, from paintings that show strong feelings to ones that break objects into shapes and pieces.
Printmaking
Main article: Printmaking
Printmaking is an art form where artists create images on a special surface called a matrix. This matrix is then used to transfer the image onto paper or other materials using ink. The same matrix can be used many times to make several copies of the print, except in a special type called a monotype.
There are many different ways to make prints, including woodcut, line engraving, etching, lithography, and screen printing. Artists can print on paper, cloth, or even modern materials. Printmaking has a long history, starting in China over a thousand years ago and later developing in Europe and Japan. In Japan, a special style called ukiyo-e became very popular, using water-based inks to create bright colors and beautiful pictures.
Photography
Main article: Photography
Photography is a way of making pictures using light. When light hits objects, it reflects or shines in patterns that can be captured. This happens through special tools called cameras, which can use mechanical shutters or electronic timing to record the light. The light is saved either on special chemical materials or digital chips.
The word “photography” comes from ancient Greek words for “light” and “drawing,” which together mean “drawing with light.” Traditionally, the result is called a photograph, but today many people use the word “image” or “photo” to describe these pictures, especially since most photos are now taken digitally.
Architecture
Architecture is the art and science of planning, designing, and building structures like buildings. Throughout history, great buildings have become symbols of different cultures and civilizations. One of the oldest books about architecture is De architectura by the Roman writer Vitruvius. He said that a good building should be strong, useful, and beautiful.
Buildings begin with basic needs such as shelter and safety, using whatever materials and skills are available. As societies grow, building becomes more advanced, turning into a special kind of craft known as architecture.
Filmmaking
Main article: Filmmaking
Filmmaking is the art of making movies. It starts with an idea and includes writing a story, filming scenes, adding special effects, and editing everything together with music and sound. Filmmakers create many kinds of movies, including documentaries and experimental films, and they also work with videos.
Computer art

Computers have changed the way artists create. Since the 1960s, artists have used computers to make and change pictures, explore different designs, and print their work, even in 3D. Computer art means any art where computers help make or show the piece. This can be a picture, sound, animation, video, game, website, or even a performance.
Today, many kinds of art use digital tools. An artist might mix traditional painting with computer methods. Because of this, it can be hard to tell where traditional art ends and digital art begins. Computer art is shown in museums and is often used as a tool to help create many different types of art.

US copyright definition of visual art
In the United States, laws protect the copyright of certain types of visual art more strictly. A "work of visual art" can be a painting, drawing, print, or sculpture. These pieces must either exist as a single copy or in a limited edition of 200 or fewer copies, all signed and numbered by the artist. Sculptures can also be considered if there are 200 or fewer numbered and marked copies.
However, some items are not included in this definition. This includes posters, maps, technical drawings, applied art, motion pictures, books, magazines, and similar publications. Also excluded are items made for advertising or selling, as well as works created specifically for an employer.
