The idea for the museum started with a naturalist named Albert S. Bickmore in 1861. It opened its doors to the public on May 22, 1871. Over the years, many new parts of the museum have been built, including the Rose Center for Earth and Space that opened in 2000.

Today, the museum is visited by many people each year. It also has scientists who travel the world to learn more about nature and share their discoveries with everyone. The museum is very important for learning about the natural world and our place in it.
