The Pantheon in Rome
The Pantheon is a very old and special building in Rome, Italy. It was built a long, long time ago as a place to honor all the gods of ancient Rome. Today, it is a beautiful Catholic church called the Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs.
The Pantheon has a round shape with a huge dome on top. This dome is made of strong concrete and is the largest one in the world without any extra support inside! Light shines through a small hole at the top of the dome called the oculus, making a lovely glow inside.
Many people visit the Pantheon every year to see its amazing design and learn about ancient Roman history. Inside, you can see beautiful artworks and statues. Some very important people from history, like kings and artists, are buried there too.
The Pantheon has been standing for over 1,800 years and is still in great shape thanks to careful looking after by Italy's Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. It is one of the best-preserved ancient buildings in the whole world!
