The United States Navy

The United States Navy is the sea part of the United States Armed Forces. It helps keep the country safe and supports peace around the world.

The Navy has many ships, airplanes, and people. It works in important places like the Western Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. The Navy is part of the Department of the Navy, which also includes the United States Marine Corps.

What the Navy Does

The Navy’s job is to protect the country and keep peace. It gets ready for any trouble, takes care of airplanes, and makes new plans and tools. The Navy also helps control the seas, shows strength, keeps the oceans safe, moves supplies by sea, and supports other military teams when needed.

A Little History

The Navy started a long time ago, during the American Revolutionary War. In those days, Massachusetts had its own small navy. The idea of a national navy was discussed in the Continental Congress. Commander in Chief George Washington helped start the navy. On October 13, 1775, Congress approved two armed ships, creating the Continental Navy. After the war, the last ship was sold in 1785.

In 1972, the Navy began celebrating its birthday on October 13. The Navy grew and changed over time. It helped in many important events, like World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. Today, the Navy continues to support the United States around the world.

Where the Navy Works

The Navy has many bases in the United States and other countries. In the Eastern United States, many bases are in Hampton Roads, Virginia. In the Western United States and Hawaii, big bases are in California and Washington state. The Navy also has bases in Guam, Puerto Rico, Japan, Italy, Spain, Greece, and the Persian Gulf.

Cool Ships and Planes

The Navy has many amazing ships and airplanes. Some of the biggest ships are aircraft carriers, like the Nimitz-class and the Gerald R. Ford-class. These ships can carry many airplanes. Other important ships include cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines. The Navy also has special airplanes, like the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, that fly from aircraft carriers.

The Navy uses many different weapons to protect itself and its friends. These include missiles, torpedoes, and mines. Naval airplanes use weapons like those used by the United States Air Force.

Special Flags

The Navy uses special flags called jacks. One special flag is the Union Jack, a small blue flag with the stars of all 50 states. From 2002 to 2019, Navy ships flew a different flag called the First Navy Jack to remember a very sad event. Now, the Union Jack is used again to remember an important naval battle from 1942.

Famous Sailors

Many important people in American history served in the Navy. Some famous officers include John P. Jones, John Barry, James Lawrence, Stephen Decatur Jr., David Farragut, and George Dewey. Even some U.S. Presidents, like John F. Kennedy, served in the Navy.

The Navy has helped the United States stay safe and strong for a very long time. Its ships, airplanes, and people work together to keep peace and support the country everywhere in the world.
