South Atlantic states

The South Atlantic states are a group of states in the southeastern part of the United States. They are one of the nine areas that the United States Census Bureau uses to organize and study the country's population. This group is known as U.S. Census Bureau Region 3, Division 5.

These states include places that were once part of the Thirteen Colonies, which were the original settlements that later formed the United States. Florida is also included in this group, even though it was not one of the original colonies.

The South Atlantic states are important because they have many people living there and they play a big role in the country's history, culture, and economy. They are part of what we often call the American South.

Terminology

The name "South Atlantic states" does not come from the South Atlantic Ocean. Instead, it describes these states because they are found along the Atlantic Coast of the United States. To the north of this area are the Middle Atlantic and New England states, which are also near the Atlantic coast but are considered separate groups.

Geography

This area includes eight states and one district: Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington. It is a recognized geographical division used by the United States Geological Survey.^: 2 Most places in this region, except Washington and West Virginia, are near the North Atlantic Ocean.

Together with the East South Central states (Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee) and the West South Central states (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas), the South Atlantic states are part of the United States Census Bureau's larger area called the South. The other three main areas of the United States are the Northeast, Midwest, and West.

Demographics

As of 2010, the South Atlantic states had a combined population of 61,774,970 people. The area covers 292,589 square miles (757,800 km²). Except for West Virginia, this region has grown quickly in population and economy in recent decades.
