Timeline of discovery of Solar System planets and their moons

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

A stunning view of Earth from space, showing our planet as a beautiful blue marble floating in the vastness of space.

The timeline of discovery of Solar System planets and their natural satellites shows how humans have found new objects in space over time. Each object is listed in the order it was discovered, along with the person or people who found it. Sometimes, the exact moment of discovery can be a bit tricky because it may involve taking pictures, looking through telescopes, and then telling others about the find.

In the past, naming moons was not always easy. The person who discovered a moon usually got to name it, but sometimes they decided not to give it a name right away, or they even said they would just use numbers instead. For example, one discoverer said he would think about names later but never did, and another said the new moons would only be known by numbers like X and XI. This problem started very early, even with the first moons of Jupiter that Galileo saw but called by numbers, while another astronomer, Simon Marius, suggested names that later became the ones we use today.

To help make sure everyone uses the same names, the International Astronomical Union began officially approving names for moons in the late 1970s. But with many new discoveries in the 2000s and beyond, some moons, like Jupiter LI and Jupiter LII found in 2010, still wait for their official names. This timeline tells the story of how we have learned about the many worlds that orbit our planets.

Key info

In the following tables, moons are shown in bold type (e.g. Moon) while planets and dwarf planets, which orbit the Sun directly, are shown in italic type (e.g. Earth). The Sun itself is shown in regular type. The tables are organized by the date they were announced or published.

Dates are marked with special symbols to show different moments of discovery:

  • i: for the date of the discovery observation.
  • o: for the date of first human visual observation, either through a telescope or on a photographic plate.
  • p: for the date of announcement or publication.

Some dates are uncertain and are marked with "(?)". Certain moons had tricky discoveries, such as being lost and then found again, so they might appear more than once in the list to make things clear.

Prehistorically discovered

People have always noticed the bright lights in the night sky. The five planets that move against the background of stars — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn — were known to ancient civilizations long before written history began. These planets were often mistaken for stars because of their steady glow.

Over time, people realized these objects moved differently from the stars, which helped them become some of the first celestial bodies known to humans.

17th century

In the 1600s, scientists kept finding new moons around Saturn. Each time they found one, they changed the numbering so the moons were still listed in the right order from the planet. This way, everyone knew exactly how many moons had been found and where they stood in line from Saturn.

18th century

In 1797, William Lassell faced some confusion with the moons of Uranus. He sometimes used different numbers for the moons Titania and Oberon. Later, in 1851, when he discovered two more moons named Ariel and Umbriel, he organized the four known moons of Uranus in order from the planet: Ariel as I, Umbriel as II, Titania as III, and Oberon as IV. This ordering became the standard way to name these moons.

19th century

The discovery of a moon named Amalthea was important because it changed how we name moons. Before this, when a new moon was found, the Roman numerals used in its name would change to show its distance from the planet. But after Amalthea was discovered, the numerals started to show the order in which moons were found instead. This made it easier to keep track of all the moons as more were discovered.

20th century

The 20th century was an exciting time for space discoveries. Many new moons around planets were found during this period. Scientists used telescopes to spot these distant objects and added them to our understanding of the Solar System.

From the early 1900s to the year 2000, astronomers continued to search the skies. They discovered numerous moons orbiting planets like Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. Each new finding helped us learn more about how our Solar System is put together.
