Spanish Language
Spanish is a beautiful language spoken by millions of people around the world. It is also called español or Castilian (castellano). Spanish started from old Latin words brought to Spain by Romans a long time ago.
Today, Spanish is very important. It is the official language in 20 countries and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. It is the world’s second-most spoken native language after Mandarin Chinese, and the fourth-most spoken language overall.
Spanish is a Romance language, which means it comes from Latin. Many people study Spanish in schools, along with English and French. It is used in many important subjects like the humanities and social sciences. Spanish is also widely used on the internet and by many international groups such as the European Union and the Organization of American States.
Where Spanish Is Spoken
Spanish is the main language in many countries. About 519 million people speak Spanish as their first language. Another 117 million speak Spanish as a second or foreign language, making it the fourth most spoken language overall. Spanish is also the third most used language on the Internet, after English and Chinese.
In Europe, Spanish is the official language of Spain. It is also widely spoken in Gibraltar and Andorra. Many people in other European countries, like the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany, speak Spanish too.
In the Americas, most Spanish speakers live in Hispanic America. Spanish is the official language in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
In the United States, Spanish is very common. Over 60 million people in the U.S. have Hispanic origins. About 41.8 million people aged five or older speak Spanish at home. Spanish is the most common second language in the country.
