Foreign relations of Moldova

After becoming independent from the Soviet Union, the Republic of Moldova started making friends with other countries in Europe. Moldova wants to join the European Union and stays neutral in defense matters.

In 1995, Moldova was the first post-Soviet state to join the Council of Europe. It also joined important groups such as NATO’s Partnership for Peace program, the United Nations, and the World Trade Organization.

In 2005, Moldova and the European Union made a plan to work together better. After a conflict called the Transnistria War, Moldova tried to solve the Transnistria conflict peacefully. They talked with Romania, Ukraine, and Russia, and worked with groups like the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the United Nations.

Moldova wants to join the European Union. It is working on its first three-year plan as part of the European Neighbourhood Policy of the EU.

In energy matters, Moldova watched the treaty creating the Energy Community from the start in 2006. Later, Moldova wanted to join fully, and talks began in 2007. In December 2009, the Energy Community Ministerial Council agreed Moldova could join, but only after changing some rules in Moldova’s gas law. Moldova became a full member of the Energy Community in March 2010.

The Moldovan Parliament approved the country’s membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States and the CIS charter on economic union in April 1994. However, Moldova has never taken part in any military activities of the CIS, because of its neutral status.

Russia still keeps soldiers in the Transnistrian area of Moldova.

Moldova got Observer Status in the Russian-led Eurasian Union in April 2017.
